They were very popular before the Crusades, in India; as the tailor for the king wanted to impress him, so he glued the rhinestones to all of the kings clothing. Do it yourself rhinestone kits used to include a few fabrics of cloth, which a person could use to simply iron the entire patch onto a pair of jeans, or shirt. Some kits allowed the hobbyist to place the rhinestones in any order they chose, and use a hot iron to heat up the adhesive. Both ways are fun to do and once the hobbyist finished they could wear the clothes and show them off to their friends and family.

Rhinestones these days are mostly made from glass, and just have the name rhinestone, because people decorate their clothes with them. This was really the only way left for this type of fashion, as the demand for real rhinestones soon brought about higher prices for the stones which became unfeasible for people to use. It also helped to preserve our natural gem stones. Colored glass has now become so popular that you can find iron-on transfers anywhere.

Fashion companies have used these colored glass rhinestones to create thousands of different types, colors, and shapes for hobbyists everywhere. The world of fashion has strongly embraced the use of rhinestones on stage costumes. This stands to reason since the original purpose of using rhinestones was a sign of wealth, glamour, and exuberance.
